Target: Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus
Goal: Don’t make getting rid of national parks and forests part of the official Republican Party platform.
Republicans are making the immediate disposal of all national public lands part of their official party platform for this year. The platform committee met recently to draft this document and are including a provision calling for legislation that gives all national parks and forests to states, eliminating their protected status and letting state governments decide what to do with them. In the meantime, these lands may be left without any protections.
National parks and forests are often protected because they contain habitats for endangered animals like gray wolves, bald eagles, and other majestic and essential creatures. Many of the states that have these parks within their borders are controlled by political leaders who are anti-environment and are known to prioritize profits and hunting above the well-being of animals and would likely fail to reinstate protections for these areas.
No matter what political party you prefer, national parks and forests benefit everyone. Protecting endangered animals and preserving the beauty of our lands should be a cross-party priority. Sign our petition to demand that the Republican Party platform committee remove any attempts to end protections for national parks and forests from the official GOP platform document.
Dear Mr. Priebus,
I understand that the current draft of the Republican Party platform includes a provision to immediately get rid of all national parks and forests and turn that land over to state governments. This is unacceptable to anyone who cares about the beauty of the American countryside and the well-being of our native species, particularly the many species in these areas that are on the Endangered Species List.
This is not the right way to give power back to the states. Many states will not make it a priority to restore protections to the areas that were once national parks and forests within their borders. In the meantime, endangered species like gray wolves and bald eagles will be left vulnerable to hunters, habitat destruction, and other kinds of human intervention. Forests could be exploited, polluting the air and water, cutting down beautiful trees, and destroying entire ecosystems.
People on both sides of the aisle will not permit this. Our national parks and forests need to remain protected in order to preserve the integrity of our national landscape and keep innocent animals from being wiped out forever. I demand that you remove the provision to end national parks and forests from the official GOP platform.
