Target: Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon
Goal: Take steps to address rapidly dwindling global biodiversity.
Deforestation and pollution have caused the variety of plants and animals on Earth to plummet to dangerously low levels for more than half of the world’s available landmass. In a recent report, a committee of international scientists noted that this lack of biodiversity is unsustainable and will have grave consequences if left unchecked.
In an analysis of thousands of sites across the globe, this comprehensive study concluded that a measure of the intactness of biodiversity has dropped well below the safety limit of 58.1 percent. Scientists are referring to this lack of diversity as a game of “ecological roulette,” as a damaged ecosystem means that humans cannot sustain themselves through agricultural practices.
Humans have not just a responsibility to protect the environment, but an obligation. If biodiversity continues to suffer, it won’t be long before humans begin to feel the effects. Sign the petition below and demand an organized international effort to save the planet.
Dear Mr. Ban,
I am writing in regards to a recent report in which an international coalition of scientists reported on the planet’s diminishing biodiversity. According to this study, the earth is well past the safety limit, and further degradation could have disastrous ecological consequences.
As the species responsible for this disturbing news, humans have an obligation to fix this damage before it is too late. We rely on this planet for sustenance, but continued destruction will soon render it incapable of supporting us. Please address this troubling situation immediately.
