Target: Sunny Jamil, activist with Help Welfare Organization
Goal: Praise efforts to protect elephant that was confined and chained for decades.
An elephant named Kaavan finally gained his freedom in Murghazar Zoo in Pakistan. He had been chained for most of his life, which is over 30 years. He has lived in a small metal shed unable to move much at all, and the intelligent animal was reported as appearing to suffer from depression. Thanks in part to the efforts of activist Samar Khan, Kaavan was unchained and allowed to roam his enclosure freely for the first time in his life.
Now after being freed, activist Sunny Jamil and others from Help Welfare Organization check on the liberated elephant every day to ensure that he is still protected. They check to protect the progress made in improving his living conditions and also are fighting to have him moved to a more humane sanctuary in the future if possible.
Sadly, Kaavan was found recently chained up once again this time in a concrete pit, while his supposed caretaker had left and was selling sugarcane to tourists. Jamil and his team from Help Welfare Organization demanded that Kaavan be unchained once again, and finally he was.
This incident shows how easily the selfish intents of lazy caretakers can lead to loss of these animals’ rights, even after these rights were fought for and won. We need more people like Jamil to continue to fight for better conditions for suffering animals. Sign this petition to thank Jamil and the workers with Help Welfare Organization for the work they have done to help Kaavan.
Dear Mr. Jamil,
You and your team have done an excellent service by helping to protect the rights of Kaavan the elephant in Islamabad. Spending years, let alone decades, chained within a tiny enclosure is an unimaginably torturous existence and not one that Kaavan deserved.
Your work to continuously check up on Kaavan and ensure his welfare has not gone unappreciated. Despite it being easier for Kaavan’s official caretakers to chain him up and neglect his welfare, there is no excuse for such disdain for Kaavan’s rights and well-being, and you and your team have done a great service by forcing accountability and responsibility on these men and continuously protecting Kaavan’s health.
