Target: American Geophysical Union (AGU) President Margaret Leinen
Goal: Reject dirty ExxonMobil money to maintain American Geophysical Union’s scientific integrity.
The board of the American Geophysical Union is considering taking money from ExxonMobil, the multinational oil and gas corporation that has spend millions in an attempt to deny the climate science that says the extraction of fossil fuels is leading us into an environmental disaster. AGU is a non-profit that includes oceanic and atmosphere science, meaning that it could be a leader in the fight against global warming. If it ends up in the pocket of Exxon, this is unlikely to happen.
Months ago, AGU announced that it would be taking the money under the pretense that Exxon doesn’t make an effort to fight climate science anymore. Since then, more evidence has come to light showing that the corporation is continuing to pour money into climate denying organizations like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Because of this, AGU’s board of directors is rethinking the decision to take $35,000 from Exxon.
A non-profit group of over 62,000 scientists should never even consider taking money from such an anti-scientific and anti-environment company as ExxonMobil. Sign our petition to demand that the board of AGU vote to reject this sponsorship permanently.
Dear Ms. Leinen,
The American Geophysical Union recently decided to revisit whether it should accept $35,000 in sponsorship money from ExxonMobil after more evidence emerged that the multinational oil and gas corporation has been spending money in the name of climate change denial. The fact is that you never should have agreed to or even considered taking the money in the first place.
As a non-profit organization that represents 62,000 scientists and includes oceanic and atmosphere sciences, you have a responsibility to ensure that you’re free of any influence from the anti-science and anti-environmental climate deniers like Exxon. This company has donated millions to organizations like ALEC and political groups dedicated to denying the irrefutable reality of climate science. You should not have anything to do with ExxonMobil.
We demand that you push the AGU board to reject any notion of taking sponsorship money from Exxon. It’s no secret that money like this comes with strings attached, and as a non-profit, you must maintain the integrity of your scientific organization. Please do the right thing for your members and for the health of the planet and every individual living on it.
