Tell State Shelters To Go No-Kill

Target: Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey

Goal: Demand all animal shelters in New Jersey switch to no-kill policies.

Despite the number of no-kill animal shelters being greater now than it was in the past, too many shelters are still putting animals to sleep simply because they cannot find homes within a certain time period, usually one week. The amount of animals euthanized in shelters within the past three years is staggering, and many of these animals were put down simply because they had not yet been adopted.

Euthanasia should be the practice of last resort for ill and suffering animals whose continued longevity would only be cruel. It should not be the solution to crowded shelters and animals unable to find homes. All animals will eventually be adopted, and it is unfair to end their lives before giving them a chance to be someone’s pet.

Some shelters will use this practice to guilt potential adopters into taking home a specific cat or dog. This is not right, people should be encouraged to adopt an animal because they want to care for a pet, not because a shelter is threatening to kill an animal if they are not taken home in a certain amount of time. In addition, the term “shelter” implies the animals are being taken care of and given a temporary home before they are adopted, and to end their lives based on an arbitrary time limit makes a mockery of the term.

Overcrowding is the reason given for euthanizing animals who are not adopted quickly enough, but that no longer seems to be a valid reason. Even smaller shelters are making the effort to provide more room for the growing number of strays, rescues and surrenders brought to them regularly. We no longer need to cram animals into tiny cages and make them stay there until they are either taken home or put to sleep. Sign this petition to demand the remaining kill shelters in New Jersey change their policies and let their animals keep their lives.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Christie,

The practice of putting animals to sleep simply because they are not adopted within a certain number of days is outdated and inhumane. Animal shelters in New Jersey that still adhere to this practice should be encouraged to change their policies and let the animals live so that someday they might become beloved pets, rather than guilt-tripping potential adopters by enforcing a time limit before the animals are put down.

Every animal deserves a chance to become a pet, no matter how long it takes for someone to decide they’re the pet they want. Please implement a law requiring all New Jersey animal shelters to go no-kill. It is more ethical, more humane and a more honest business practice.

Sincerely,

The problem with no kill is that they must be limited admission or become hoarders. We cant afford to be limited admission, it is inhumane. A shelter must accept every animal that comes through the door, or those animals will be left to suffer and breed. We can achieve true no kill eventually, but only though adoption, fostering and spaying and neutering. Until then, no kill just means more death and suffering somewhere else.

  2. NO KILL TO SAVE GREAT LIVES. MANDATORY SPAY AND NEUTER FOR THE ANIMALS.

  3. Enough already. This has been going on too long.
