Applaud Animal Safety Lessons for Schoolchildren

Target: Andrea Midgen, CEO of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Auckland

Goal: Praise initiative designed to reduce animal cruelty by teaching children about responsible pet ownership.

Young schoolchildren will soon have access to animal safety lessons to teach them about responsible pet ownership. The program, developed by New Zealand’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), can be implemented by teachers and ties into other subjects taught in schools. For example, children will use their math skills to calculate the cost of owning pets.

The program, which aims to reduce animal abuse, will be taught at over 100 schools across New Zealand. It will teach the importance of spaying and neutering pets as well as outline the responsibilities of a pet owner, including providing food, veterinary care, and enrichment. From a young age, these students will learn compassion, respect, and a sense of duty for the well-being of all animals.

Each year, 60,000 abandoned, neglected, or abused animals are cared for by the SPCA. With research showing that animal abuse and violence at home are closely related, this initiative will instill non-violent values in children from a young age. A trial run of the program in 22 schools in Auckland showed a “strong shift in the knowledge and attitudes about basic animal care” among students.

This program will teach children important skills and will help to form a future with less animal abuse. Sign the petition to praise the creation of this initiative and ask that everything possible is done to ensure its continued success.

Dear Ms. Midgen,

A new initiative by the SPCA will see animal welfare lessons taught in schools. The classes will teach children about responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spaying, neutering, and vaccinating animals. They will also work to instill a sense of respect and compassion toward animals in the young learners. These lessons will be taught in over 100 schools across the country and will integrate other skills, such as mathematics.

By teaching these basics to children at a young age, they could be less likely to commit animal cruelty in the future. This early education will set up a new generation of compassionate, responsible pet owners. We, the undersigned, praise this innovative move and ask that you work to ensure its continued success.
