Target: Missouri Gubernatorial Candidate Eric Greitens
Goal: Denounce political candidate for terrorizing local Muslims by selling fake “ISIS hunting permits” to raise money for his campaign.
A Missouri gubernatorial candidate has been offering bumper sticks that say “ISIS HUNTING PERMIT 2016” in exchange for donations to his campaign. The local Muslim community has expressed serious concern over how this could fuel violent anti-Muslim sentiment in the American South during a time when they’re already being targeted by both violent rhetoric and actual deadly violence.
Considering the fact that there have been violent threats against mosques, brutal assaults and murders of Muslim individuals, and nearly daily mass shootings, it’s in extremely bad taste to be selling fake hunting permits about a terrorist organization that so many people mistakenly associate with everyday, peaceful Muslims. It’s not secret that rhetoric about “Islamic terrorists” is strongly linked to physical violence against innocent people of this faith. Recently, a Muslim doctor was shot and stabbed on his way to pray at his local mosque in Texas.
Missouri Republican gubernatorial candidate Eric Greitens is putting innocent people in danger by fueling violence like this with a cheap trick to get donations. Sign our petition to demand that he immediately stop selling these “permits” and issue a public apology denouncing violence against Muslim individuals.
Dear Mr. Greitens,
Your recent fundraising stunt of giving out bumper stickers saying “ISIS HUNTING PERMIT 2016” for donations is creating an ever more hostile environment for Muslim citizens in Missouri. In recent years, multiple innocent Muslim individuals have been assaulted or murdered just for being Muslim and mosques have been threatened and defaced with graffiti talking about “ISIS.”
Everyday Muslims living in America are not terrorists and hate ISIS for attacking and murdering fellow Muslims in the Middle East. Unfortunately, many people still associate completely peaceful individuals with terrorists because ISIS claims to follow Islam and commit violent upon them based on this. Fueling anti-Islam sentiment with these bumper stickers is putting innocent people at risk of ignorant violence.
Muslim communities in your state have already expressed serious concern over these fake hunting permits. Please stop making life terrifying and unsafe for innocent Muslims. Stop handing out these hateful bumper stickers and issue a public apology decrying violence against the Muslim community.
