Move Climate Issues to the Forefront of the Democratic Campaign

Target: Donna Brazile, Democratic Party Chair

Goal: Ask the Democrats to make climate change a major part of their platform.

Earlier this year the Democratic Party released its party platform, which highlighted the issues that it will be focusing on in this coming presidential election. The platform does little to truly emphasize the importance of climate issues with innovative ideas. Demand that the Democratic Party put this life-threatening issue at the forefront of its platform.

If we don’t seriously address climate issues, we are in for a global climate catastrophe. We’ve already warmed the planet 1.5 degrees in the last 250 years and are at risk of reaching a 2 degree increase. This is where the sea levels will rise enough that major cities such as Boston, Miami, and San Diego are inundated, and major weather events such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and monsoons will occur at a much higher frequency. It’s estimated that we could reach 2 degrees by the end of the century, meaning disaster for Earth’s inhabitants.

Greenland is experiencing faster melting ice caps than at any point in recorded history, there are coastal towns that are already having to pick up and move farther back on the shore because of rising sea levels. This is an issue that we are seeing the results of already.

Climate change is a matter of undisputed science, rather than colorful rhetoric; it can be consistently backed up with science and hard evidence, yet the Democratic Party has taken a surprisingly lax position on it. Demand that Democrats include language in their party platform to make climate change issues a top priority for 2016.

Dear Donna Brazile,

The American people are terrified that the world is going to collapse in on itself before the birth of their grandchildren. Climate change is an issue that’s already affecting us and is definitely going to be felt by our children and their children. The planet’s ecosystem is at a high risk of imploding because of the amount of methane we release from practices like fracking, yet the Democratic Party refuses to declare opposition to fracking as a practice. Fracking has been proven to be more harmful than coal, yet the DNC didn’t include any language in the party platform about banning fracking.

We are living in a world that is slowly eating itself alive because of our harmful industry practices all across the world. This isn’t just a world problem, either, this is specifically an American problem as we’ve seen many communities ruined by fracking in their areas. Polluted water supplies, damaged land, decimated rivers and lakes, all of these are a result of fracking, yet Hillary Clinton has refused to declare outright opposition to the practice.

We are currently in a position where any real progress that occurs in relation to climate change has yet to come and only exists as a proposal. If we are going to reform the Democratic Party so much so to include proposals that were deemed radical only 6 months ago, we should reform the Democratic Party to truly represent the biggest problem facing us today: Climate change. Don’t let any more time pass; put climate change at the forefront of the 2016 platform.
