Target: President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya
Goal: Ensure an independent investigation into the disappearance and murder of a human rights lawyer, client and taxi driver.
A human rights lawyer, his client, and their taxi driver have been abducted and murdered with evidence pointing to the involvement of law enforcement in the crime. Human rights lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda, and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri were abducted in Nairobi, Kenya as they left court. A week later their bodies were found in a river 73 kilometers outside of Nairobi. While it is unclear where they were immediately before their deaths, there have been reports that they spent some of that week imprisoned in a police detention center.
The abduction and murder of the three men may well relate to Josphat Mwenda filing a complaint with Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority against a senior police officer after that officer allegedly shot him illegally during a traffic stop. Months after Mr. Mwenda filed the complaint, the same police department filed traffic charges against him. Evidence points to the involvement of officers from that same police department in the abductions and murders.
Given the involvement of law enforcement in this matter, it is critical that there be an independent and transparent investigation into these crimes to ensure that all involved are brought to justice. Sign our petition and demand that the investigation into these crimes be independent and its findings open to the public.
Dear President Kenyatta,
I was shocked to hear of the abduction, forced disappearance, and murder of Willie Kimani, Josephat Mwenda, and Joseph Muiruri. Further, it was disturbing to hear reports that prior to their murder, these men were held in the Syokimau AP Camp. While I am encouraged to hear of the arrest of three officers prior to the murders becoming public knowledge, I believe there is a need for an independent and transparent review to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice and to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
As you are no doubt aware, the murder of an individual who had previously lodged a complaint with the IPOA will discourage future complaints. This will undermine efforts to make law enforcement more accountable to the public. It is, therefore, critical that there be consequences for those responsible. So again, I urge you to ensure that the investigation into this matter is independent and transparent.
