Target: North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory
Goal: Stop using money from disaster relief fund to fuel fight against the LGBTQ community.
North Carolina’s governor has demanded that money intended for disaster relief be diverted to support the state’s efforts to implement an anti-LGBTQ bill. The state’s newly-released budget calls for $500,000 to pay for legal fees in cases against House Bill 2, which eliminates protections for the homosexual and transgender community.
In order to find enough money to support this bill, the funds will be transferred from the state’s Emergency Response and Disaster Relief Fund. Rather than repair cities and homes after a hurricane, the money will be used to support Gov. Pat McCrory’s efforts to illegally discriminate against a vulnerable and persecuted community.
The controversial move is not an accident or miscalculation; it is a direct order from Governor McCrory. When asked to explain the decision, Senate Budget Chairman Harry Brown replied, “The governor asked for it.”
It’s bad enough that the state insists on implementing this discriminatory bill, but to use funds that were intended for disaster relief is simply wrong. Sign the petition below and demand that the money be redistributed immediately.
Dear Mr. McCrory,
I am writing to express my outrage concerning your office’s decision to request funds from the Emergency Response and Disaster Relief Fund in order to pay for legal defense in cases against House Bill 2. From its inception, HB2 has been denounced as discriminatory and illegal, yet your office insists on implementing this piece of legislation.
Rather than repair cities and homes after a hurricane, this massive sum of money will be used to support your office’s efforts to illegally discriminate against a vulnerable and persecuted community. I urge you to please reconsider this decision and leave the money where it belongs.
