Ban Oil Transportation Trains

Target: Kate Brown, Oregon Governor

Goal: Outlaw the use of oil trains in the state of Oregon.

An oil train recently derailed and started a fire that spread so rapidly that a nearby town had to evacuate its residents. This was almost directly after Union Pacific lobbied against Oregon’s new laws restricting oil train use and won the right to continue operating its trains as before. This was obviously a mistake as almost immediately after Union Pacific won, thousands of gallons of oil were spilled in the Columbia River Gorge and started a terribly damaging fire. Demand that Oregon steps up and outright ban the practice of oil trains before any more spills happen.

Every day, it grows clearer that oil is not only an outdated energy source, but an incredibly dangerous one. As the United States moves closer to using renewable energy sources, we need to begin the process of phasing out old techniques that have proven to be a bigger risk than the reward they provide. In the months preceding this incident, there were multiple oil train derailments all across the West Coast.

With clean waterways and abundant greenery, Oregon has one of the healthiest natural ecosystems in the country. This is why we can’t allow any more incidents like these to occur, there is just far too much natural beauty at stake. Oregon was already proposing new legislation earlier last year to restrict the use of oil trains, but now it’s time they be banned outright. Oregon is already a leader in the world when it comes to green policy. Ask legislators to take another step to help improve the state’s carbon footprint.

Dear Governor Brown,

What happened in the Columbia River Gorge can only be described as a natural tragedy caused by unnatural sources. Oil trains have had a long reputation of being dangerous and the recent oil spill near Mosier is only proof of this. An entire community had to leave their homes and schools for a period of time due to the irresponsibility of oil train operation.

There was already action being taken earlier last year to restrict oil train usage, yet that restriction was blocked by lobbyists from Union Pacific. Now is your chance to stand up the oil and train lobbies by shutting down any scheduled oil trains going through the state of Oregon.

As we move closer to independence from crude energy sources and embrace renewable energy, it is time to begin phasing out archaic business practices such as oil trains. Be the leader that the environment, and the state of Oregon, deserve. Create legislation to ban crude oil trains from passing through Oregon and help move the state, and our country forward in the fight for renewable energy.
