Target: Douglas McMillon, CEO of Walmart
Goal: Stop selling eggs from a farm where chickens reportedly suffer horrific conditions.
An investigation has revealed appalling living conditions for thousands of hens at an egg farm. Investigators from Mercy for Animals found severe cases of animal abuse at Briarwood Farms in Rochester and Oakville, Washington. Thousands of hens were reportedly crammed into cages too small for them to walk, spread their wings or even rest comfortable. Some birds were trapped in the cages’ wire, trampled by cage-mates, or too weak to reach food and water. The rotting corpses of dead chickens still occupied the cages where living hens continued to lay eggs for human consumption.
Moreover, investigators report seeing birds being denied veterinary care despite suffering from swollen eyes, bleeding prolapses and extreme feather loss among other serious afflictions. Footage also reportedly shows hens being brutally mishandled by Briarwood Farms employees.
The farming operation has undertaken an internal investigation, but this will do nothing to ensure their chickens do not continue to suffer. Eggs from this inhumane facility are allegedly sold at Walmart and other major supermarkets under the Eggland’s Best brand. Sign this petition urging Walmart to immediately cut ties with Briarwood Farms and stop selling eggs from caged hens, with the hope that other major grocers will follow suit.
Dear Mr. McMillon,
Briarwoods Farms in Washington State has come under fire following an investigation revealing alleged abuse to egg-laying hens at the facility. Footage and images reportedly show chickens packed into tiny cages, unable to move or spread their wings, and sharing their living space with dead or dying hens. Some were allegedly shown suffering from severe and painful afflictions and denied veterinary treatment.
However, Walmart is reportedly selling eggs from this very facility under the brand Eggland’s Best. We urge you to immediately cut ties with this company and ensure your stores stop selling eggs from caged hens.
