Success: Starving Horses Rescued and Owners Charged

Target: Shane Mitchell, Kentucky Agricultural Department Investigator

Goal: Praise the decision to rescue neglected and starving horses abandoned at a farm and charge the owners with animal cruelty.

A number of severely emaciated horses have been rescued from the farm they were kept in, and the owners have been charged with animal cruelty. The neglected horses had been abandoned on a farm in Kentucky belonging to horse trainer and Breeders’ Cup winner Maria Borell and her father. They have been charged with 43 counts of second-degree cruelty to animals for the suffering they caused to over 40 horses.

This comes shortly after a ForceChange petition urging authorities to step in to save the horses and charge the farm’s owners. These animals had reportedly been left by the Borells with no food, fresh water or veterinary care. As a result, several of them needed treatment for malnutrition. The animals will now be taken care of by the state and by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

Sign this petition thanking authorities for finally taking action to save these horses and for holding the farm owners accountable.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Mitchell,

Thank you for charging Maria Borell and her father with 43 counts of second-degree cruelty to animals for abandoning over 40 horses to starve in their farm. This has allowed these horses to be rescued and receive much-needed food and treatment.

It is crucial that the Borells be severely punished by the law for starving these horses, causing them to suffer and become emaciated with six of them in critical condition. People who mistreat or neglect animals must be charged and prosecuted to ensure that animal abuse is treated as the serious crime it is.

Sincerely,

  1. Punish this woman and her father to the max. I’m sure that she loved all the money and power she got from these horses giving their all while racing and now she must do the same. They must be made an example of ….sell her farm property and pay for their vet and boarding fees and food until they find new homes. This was animal abuse to the max and they must be punished for their actions.
