Target: Nicholas Garbutt, Wildlife Officer at Hampton Court Home Park
Goal: Introduce non-lethal methods of population control that will end the killing of park deer.
Deer are being shot and killed to control their population despite the existence of much more humane alternatives. The deer herd living in Hampton Court’s Home Park in London, UK, is being culled to control the animals’ numbers. Culling, the use of selective slaughter to reduce the population of a wild animal, is an incredibly cruel method of population control. Each individual deer killed is a sentient creature who did not deserve or want to die.
According to activist organization Stop the Deer Cull, 20 percent of all deer in London’s Royal Parks, of which Home Park is a part, are killed each year. Culling the deer results in their lifespan being three times shorter than normal. Worse still, the Royal Parks make the equivalent of 40,000 U.S. dollars annually from the sale of the murdered animals’ meat. Far more humane methods of population control are currently being used in the U.S. In Staten Island, for instance, male deer are being sterilized rather than culled.
Sign this petition urging Home Park’s Wildlife Officer to stop culling deer and use non-lethal population control methods instead, such as sterilizing the animals.
Dear Mr. Garbutt,
Culling deer in Hampton Court’s Home Park is not the answer to population control. Killing a sentient animal is never the solution, especially to a problem caused by humans. In this case, the deer have had their natural habitat shrunk because of construction on their land.
Please follow in the footsteps of Staten Island, which has decided to forgo shooting the animals and will be sterilizing male deer instead. This method is cheap, effective, and does not involve killing sentient creatures. We urge you to immediately cancel the deer cull and replace it with humane population control instead.
