Success: Volkswagen to Pay $14.7 Billion in Emissions Cheating Scandal

Target: Attorney General of the United States Loretta Lynch

Goal: Applaud massive settlement with Volkswagen in emissions cheating case.

Car manufacturer Volkswagen agreed to pay an enormous settlement as fallout from their emissions cheating scandal continues to plague the company. The record sum, $14.7 billion, will be used to reimburse affected owners and help repair the vast amounts of environmental damage caused by the cars in question.

The scandal first broke when the Environmental Protection Agency revealed that Volkswagen was found to be selling cars with a device allowing the vehicles to meet emissions standards while simultaneously releasing dangerous amounts of nitrogen oxides. As explained in this ForceChange petition, the EPA claimed that Volkswagen used a device that turned on emissions controls during official tests, but then shut off the controls during everyday driving.

Volkswagen has since admitted to this illegal circumvention of the law, and several prominent employees have resigned or been fired over the scandal. This massive settlement is yet another punishment and will go a long way toward repairing the damage that has already been done. Sign the petition below to thank the Department of Justice for so aggressively prosecuting this deceitful practice.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mrs. Lynch,

I am writing to applaud the recent settlement reached with Volkswagen concerning reparations for the emissions cheating scandal. This company knowingly broke the law and in doing so caused extensive amounts of environmental damage. They must be held accountable for their wrongdoings, and this massive settlement is an encouraging sign.

This is not the first punishment for Volkswagen, nor should it be the last. Several company executives have already lost their jobs, and the company still faces legal charges stemming from the scandal. Thank you for so aggressively pursuing this case, and I urge you to continue your prosecution.

Sincerely,
