Target: David Cameron, Prime Minister of the UK
Goal: Act to ensure the safety of European citizens and other ethnic minorities from the recent upsurge of xenophobic and racist attacks due to Brexit vote.
In the wake of UK’s vote to leave the European Union there has been an upsurge of racist and xenophobic attacks both on European citizens living in the United Kingdom, and on British people of black, mixed, and South Asian origins. The Muslim Council of Britain has recorded over 100 incidents since the results of the referendum were reported: racist graffiti was spray-painted on a Polish cultural center, and cards have been mailed through letterboxes with racist and discriminatory statements on them. Further, a journalist of South Asian descent had racial slurs hurled at her in her hometown.
The surge in xenophobic, racist, and Islamophobic attacks comes after a campaign to exit the European Union full of dog whistle racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia. This has contributed to a polarized climate wherein a vote to leave seems to have been taken as a license to attack minority groups throughout the UK. It is clear that action must be taken to address these attacks, identify the culprits, and ensure that it is clear that the UK is not a country that accepts racist attacks against its residents. Sign our petition and demand that Prime Minister David Cameron do everything in his power to ensure the safety of European citizens, Muslims, and other ethnic minorities in the UK.
Dear Prime Minister Cameron,
I am alarmed at the upsurge of racially motivated attacks across the UK in the wake of the referendum. It seems that many people have taken the victory of Leave as a license to attack European citizens, and ethnic minorities in the UK. I believe that it is critical that the government send the message that these acts are unacceptable.
I recognize that you have made statements to this effect. However, words alone cannot communicate this. These acts must be investigated, and those responsible for these crimes must face consequences. This is the only way that the government of the UK can truly show that it is willing to protect all of its residents. Now more than ever we must show that we can truly be united.
