Target: Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta
Goal: Celebrate closing of city zoo and release of wild animals into nature reserves.
The city of Buenos Aires has announced its intentions to shut down the city’s zoo, claiming that it is cruel and degrading to keep wild animals in captivity. This decision is extremely encouraging and represents an enormous victory for animal rights activists.
In the announcement, Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta said that it was unfair to keep animals in captivity. Upon the zoo’s closing, the approximately 2,500 animals will be transferred to nature reserves across the country. Instead of languishing in a miniscule 44-acre enclosure, these intelligent and valuable creatures will soon be able to live freely as nature intended.
“This situation of captivity is degrading for the animals, it’s not the way to take care of them,” said Rodríguez. “What we have to value is the animals. The way they live here is definitely not the way to do that.”
Buenos Aires deserves to be commended for this progressive decision. Sign the petition below to thank the mayor for making such an important decision.
Dear Mayor Rodriguez,
I am writing to extend my congratulations about the recent decision to close the zoo in Buenos Aires. As you noted in your remarks, these animals should not be confined to enclosures and cages. They deserve to be free, and the decision to release them and transfer them to nature reserves is an enormous victory for animal rights activists.
Rather than confine such precious creatures, we must protect them and allow them to live as nature intended. Thank you again for your progressive decision, and I can only hope that other major cities follow your lead.
