Target: President Enrique Peña Nieto
Goal: Investigate reports that the federal police fired on protesters without giving any warning.
In Nochixtlán Oaxaca State, Mexico a police crackdown against protesting teachers has left nine dead, 23 missing, and more than 100 injured. Law enforcement, led by members of the Mexican federal police, reportedly opened fire on protesters without giving any warning, or giving protesters the opportunity to clear the area. The teachers were protesting government reforms to the education system, reforms which they claim will only degrade an educational system that often does not meet the basic needs of Mexican children.
This is not the first time protesting teachers have been attacked in Mexico. In 2014, 43 teaching students were abducted in Iguala, Guerrero and the subsequent investigation has resulted in the arrest of dozens of public officials, including police officers and politicians. However, many have criticized the lack of independence and transparency of the investigation and allege the complicity of federal authorities in the abduction. Therefore, it is vital that the investigation into the killings in Oaxaca State be independent, transparent, and accountable to the public. Sign our petition and demand such an investigation.
Dear President Peña Nieto
I was alarmed to hear of the killing of protesters in Nochixtán, and disturbed to hear reports that Mexican federal police officers fired on crowds of protesters without warning. The fact that the federal police were involved in these killings raises serious questions. Foremost among these questions is whether it is reasonable that the investigation into these killings be run by elements of the same agency potentially responsible for the deaths.
As you know, the investigation into the abduction in Iguala has already resulted in the arrest of 44 police officers. It is critical that any investigation avoid possible undue influence from members of the federal police. I urge you to ensure that the investigation into this matter is transparent, independent, and accountable to the public.
