Target: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
Goal: Support the proposed Climate Change Education Program to teach people in the U.S. about global warming.
An education outreach program on the nature and effects of climate change has been proposed via a bill introduced by Senator Ed Markey. The Climate Change Education Program would include formal curricula in public school classrooms as well as informal public information campaigns like public service announcements. It would be established by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The reality and dangers of climate change have been well established, with all but a few scientists agreeing that it exists and is human-made. As the world begins to see its deadly effects, it’s beyond time to launch an education campaign. Perhaps this will help to break down the stubborn walls of climate denial, and as the public becomes educated, hopefully climate-denying politicians can be replaced.
A recent survey found that a whopping 30 percent of teachers taught their students that climate change is “likely due to natural causes.” This is completely false. Unfortunately, it’s going to be an uphill battle to get this bill passed due to the number of politicians in the pocket of oil and coal corporations that want to keep their massive profits going. Sign our petition to demand that this bill be supported and that all efforts are taken to ensure it’s passed.
Dear Minority Leader Pelosi,
Senator Ed Markey recently introduced a bill to set up the Climate Change Education Program, which would spread information about the nature and effects of climate across the nation. It would require public school classrooms to provide the correct information about the origins of the problem and include public service announcements and other general information campaigns about the issue.
As you know, climate change is already having a severe effect on the U.S. Lives have been lost from massive hurricanes, blizzards, and other weather events that have been bigger than any the nations has ever seen. California and other states are suffering from an extreme, ongoing drought that threatens the health of citizens and economies alike.
Part of the reason for the lack of response to this clear and serious problem is due to the fact that there are too many petitions entrenched in congress who are climate deniers, likely bought off by oil and coal corporations. Education about the certainty of the existence of climate change and humanity’s contribution to it could help get these conservative sellouts replaced with more liberal opponents. Please do everything you can to support this bill and ensure the public is educated about climate change.
