Target: Florida Governor Rick Scott
Goal: Stop pushing for surveillance of refugees as a solution in the wake of the Orlando mass shooting.
The Florida governor said that police surveillance of refugees and immigrants is needed in response to the recent mass shooting in Orlando at the Pulse nightclub. This is utterly ridiculous considering the fact that the shooter was neither an immigrant nor a refugee, and was in fact a natural born United States citizen. There have been no incidents in which a refugee has committed a mass shooting in the country.
Using this horrible tragedy that may or may not have any real connection to ISIS or any other extremist terrorist group from outside the U.S. in order to target refugees and immigrants for racial profiling is reprehensible. It’s extremely unlikely to stop further mass shootings as the vast majority are committed by natural born white men. All it will do is encourage further police and citizen violence against people of color and Muslim individuals.
If we are a nation of freedom and equal rights, then we must stand up against bigots who would take any opportunity to take away freedoms from others simply because they’ve been driven from their homes by horrible violence. Sign our petition to demand that Florida Governor Rick Scott stops exploiting tragedy to push violent hatred.
Dear Governor Scott,
The way you’re handling the aftermath of the Orlando shooting is appalling. Recently, you dodged a question about gun control by saying that refugees and immigrants need to be monitored by police. This is ridiculous because the Orlando shooter was not either–he was a natural born United States citizen.
Surveillance of refugees is not going to stop mass shootings because they are not the ones committing them. The vast majority of these acts of horrible violence are committed by white male non-Muslim citizens who are disgruntled about their lives or who have been carrying intense hatred against an oppressed group. Muslims and people who bigots think are Muslims are the ones who have been targeted for violence, due in large part to people like you who are encouraging profiling and discrimination against them.
The only thing you’ve done since the Orlando shooting is to refuse to acknowledge that it resulted from bigotry against LGBT+ people and call for more bigotry against other marginalized groups. You are only advocating for more violent in the wake of one of the worst tragedies on American soil. We demand that you immediately stop calling for profiling against all refugees and immigrants. If you can’t say anything helpful, maybe don’t say anything at all.
