Target: Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google
Goal: Ban dangerous animal tracking apps from Google Play as they result in accidents and animals’ deaths.
Animals in wildlife parks are at increased risk of harm and death because of animal tracking apps. The South African National (SAN) Parks have found that reports of speeding, road rage and road kills have risen exponentially alongside the popularity and usage of mobile applications that help visitors locate wildlife. Kruger Sightings is one such app with which users can communicate the location of a particular wild animal.
Alongside potentially aiding poachers to locate their kill, it has reportedly caused an increased number of accidents for visitors and animals in wildlife parks. According to SAN Parks, the use of these apps has led to a rise in lawlessness on the part of visitors, who are more tempted to speed and act recklessly in order to see a particular animal identified by an online user. This has reportedly caused several accidents and animals being run over by speedy drivers.
Sign this petition urging Google Play to remove animal tracking apps that put wildlife and park visitors at risk from its online store.
Dear Mr. Pichai,
The South African National (SAN) Parks reports an increase in accidents and animals killed due to new animal tracking apps such as Kruger Sightings, which can be found on Google Play. According to SAN Parks, the use of these apps has led to an increase in speeding, road rage and road kills.
Such apps also have the potential of allowing poachers to better locate wild animals and kill them. Park visitors are also put at risk, due to app users’ eagerness to see a particular animal leading them to speed or act recklessly. As a result, several accidents have reportedly occurred and animals have been killed.
Please safeguard animals and park visitors by banning all wildlife tracking apps from your online store.
