Target: Michel Temer, Acting President of Brazil
Goal: Prevent Congress from censoring free speech.
Brazil’s most powerful politicians are working to restrict free speech in a desperate attempt to avoid being found guilty of corruption. A series of leaked audio recordings have revealed widespread corruption throughout the country’s government, and now a new bill is attempting to protect these unethical officials by making such recordings illegal.
The bill aims to outlaw any “filming, photographing or capturing of a person’s voice, without authorization or lawful ends,” with violators being punished with a hefty fine of up to two years. It has been lambasted as a direct threat to freedom of speech.
This bill is nothing more than a shoddy attempt by politicians to shield themselves from evidence of their crimes. The man responsible for introducing this bill, Deputado Veneziano Vital do Rêgo, is a suspect in 35 pending investigations for various crimes, which only furthers the assertion that this bill is unjust.
Politicians must be held accountable for their actions. Sign the petition below to demand that this unethical and illegal legislation be defeated.
Dear Mr. Temer,
I am writing to call your attention to a new bill that is currently gathering steam in Congress. If enacted, this bill would outlaw any unauthorized filming or recording of a person’s voice. While this may seem like a noble attempt to protect privacy, it is a thinly-veiled attempt to censor free speech and protect corrupt politicians.
The bill has become popular as Brazil’s politicians scramble to save face in light of a series of leaked audio recordings in which numerous officials have been documented committing various crimes. These politicians need to be held accountable, and this bill would allow them to continue breaking laws. Please intervene and strike down this legislation.
