Save the Endangered Ocelot’s Home

Target: Bridget Fahey, Chief of Division of Conservation and Classification

Goal: Preserve the habitat of the endangered wild ocelot.

The ocelot is one of several wild cats that have been in danger of dying out recently. The species came back from the brink of extinction once already after being hunted to endangerment for its fur, but now the ocelot needs our help once again.

Fewer than 100 of these animals remain in the United States thanks to the loss of their habitat. The national wildlife refuges in Texas remain their only safe space, but even that is not enough to help these creatures keep their numbers up. Their habitat is diminished greatly by the expansion of farming lands and the building of more and more highways. They are prevented from furthering their species due to the Mexican border wall that isolates them from seeking out their own kind throughout the rest of the world.

While the refuges are certainly a good idea, there shouldn’t be a need for them in the first place. Ocelots should be allowed to live on their own lands and further their species without complications. We already have more than enough highways; we don’t need so many that it warrants robbing wild animals of their homes. Farm land can be built anywhere with fertile soil, so there is no need to take over the thickets they call home. And there should always be a way for animals to seek out their own kind, regardless of borders or walls.

Wild cats need just as much love as our own domesticated cats, so let’s show them some by helping to preserve their homes. Sign this petition now to prevent the further endangerment of these beautiful, resilient creatures.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Fahey,

Please put a stop to the demolishing of the thickets that once housed many wild ocelots. We have enough highways in the United States already, and farmland can be built anywhere with good soil and vegetation. There’s no need to take homes from these animals.

The ocelot has already been threatened with extinction once thanks to people seeking its fur. Let’s not risk losing this species again. Discourage the building of superfluous highway space and encourage agriculturalists to plant their crops elsewhere. Make it easier for ocelots to seek out their own kind by altering the Mexican border wall.

We saved these animals once, and we can do it again. Let’s make it easier for the ocelot to live where it feels most at home.

Sincerely,
