Demand Congress Ban Assault Weapons

Target: Speaker of the House Paul Ryan

Goal: Ensure thorough background checks are conducted for individuals purchasing firearms and reinstate the federal assault weapons ban.

The perpetrator of the massacre at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando had twice been the subject of FBI investigation. Furthermore he had a documented history of violent behavior, including hate speech and domestic violence. Yet he was able to legally purchase two guns and, a few days later, used them to commit the worst mass shooting in US history. A thorough background check would have revealed these facts.

One of the weapons the gunman used was an AR-15, the same make of gun that was used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. These guns are a modification of the M16, a gun developed for the US military. They are designed for warfare, for killing people. Moreover these guns were banned under the federal assault weapons ban, which was allowed to expire in 2004.

In 2015 there were 372 mass shootings in the US, there have already been 176 this year. We may not be able to change the hate in people’s minds, but we can make it harder to turn that hate into an atrocity. Sign our petition and demand that Speaker of the House Paul Ryan back legislation for stronger background checks, and to reinstate the federal assault weapons ban.

Dear Speaker Ryan,

In the wake of the tragedy in Orlando, it should be undeniable that it is time for the federal government to take a leadership position on the problem of gun violence. A basic background check would have revealed that Omar Mateen had a history of instability, violence, and extremist beliefs and had been twice investigated by the FBI. Had the federal ban on assault weapons remained US law, it is quite possible that many of his victims would still be alive today.

I am not asking for a wholesale ban on firearms, simply that more be done to ensure that guns are in responsible hands. There have already been 176 mass shootings this year, and thousands of Americans are killed by gun violence every year. Assault weapons designed to inflict mass casualties should not be available to the public, and thorough background checks must be mandatory. I urge you to back legislation instituting thorough background checks on those purchasing firearms, and to reinstate the federal assault weapons ban.

  1. Margaret Melnick says:

I might sign this petition if I thought banning guns would do any good. This man I believe was linked to Terrorist. Do you really think terrorist would be unable to get their hands on guns. What would have stopped this attack is if everyone had been carrying a weapon. Then he would have been shot before he could kill so many. The FBI investigated him but I though you were innocent until proven guilty. Does this mean anyone that is investigated whether charged or not would be stopped from owning a gun? I think this should be re though.

  2. Gun control is one thing but there is no need for anyone to own an assault rifle that kills multiple victims in a brief period of time. If people want guns for hunting and to keep in their nightstand for safety (lol) then so be it.

    • Jeanne, you obviously have no clue about how many lives are saved by firearms each year, as indicated by your snide “(lol)”. In order to exclude yourself from the firearms illiterate how about doing just a few minutes worth of research.

  3. Tina Edmond says:

Get military guns off the street, or stop crying about Newtown and Orlando, because it will happen again. Look at Australia for an example, Margaret Melnick.

  4. It is one thing to own a personal handgun for personal protection, but the general public has no business being able to purchase assult weapons. The laws need to change with the changing times.

    • Christy, take a deep breath, calm yourself, and maybe you can find out that the general public is prohibited from owning assault weapons already. While you’re at it how about finding out how many lives are SAVED by firearms each year…easy to find but you won’t find it in a liberal source!

  5. Concerned Citizen says:

The time to act as concerned citizens is now. Opponents of assault weapons must match the organization of the NRA. This is a good start

  6. Barbara Tomlinson says:

Unless such assault weapons are banned NOW, there will DEFINITELY be more such shootings, perhaps with even MORE loss of lives. Someone said, “We are all walking around with targets on our backs.” THANKS to the NRA for that! and GOP and some Democrat Congresscritters, WHO TAKE HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY FROM THE NRA.

Activist Scorches Pro-Gun Pols Who Offer Only Their Empty ‘Thoughts & Prayers’ After Orlando Attack | Alternet
Volsky calls out politicians who simply offer their ‘thoughts and prayers’ after mass shootings by pointing out their connections to the NRA. In the aftermath of the horrific Orlando attack, Volsky has provided this public service yet again. EXPOSED!

  7. You folk’s need to wake up and smell what this government is trying to sell you. An AR-15 is not an assault weapon. The definition of an assault weapon is when the trigger is pulled and held, you have continuous fire. This would be an M16 rifle. When the trigger is depressed on an AR-15 it fires one round per trigger pull. Bottom line is the AR-15 is just a rifle that looks like an assault weapon and the anti-gun crowd wants you to believe it’s an assault weapon. Don’t just listen to what these people say, do some research and find the truth for yourself.

  8. Chazz York says:

The AR 15 is not an assault weapon. The AR 15 is a single shot per trigger compression Weapon. I wont sign this because banning the weapons won’t stop criminals from illegally having them, and using them on innocent, law abiding citizens. I am sick and tired of ill thought out causes like this one calling for a ban on weapons as if the criminal element will follow the ban, and stop using them as well to murder others. Seriously, think about it before starting a truly worthless petition like this one. Please!

    • Chazz and Michael are the only commenters on here who know what they are talking about. Assault rifles are already essentially banned from the general public. An AR 15 is a medium power semi-auto rifle, the most popular rifle in the United States with millions of them in civilian hands. They are dependable, accurate, moderately priced firearms. People, your lying president is taking you for a ride and you won’t do enough research to find out how he has lied to you. He loves to say that we shouldn’t hold all Muslims responsible for the actions of a few but he wholeheartedly wants you to hold all gunowners liable for the actions of a few!! The loonie liberals also will NOT tell you how many lives are saved with firearms every year…why don’t you show a little gumption and research that also??
