Target: Qatari Attorney General Dr. Ali Bin Fetais Al Marri
Goal: Overturn “sex out of wedlock” conviction of tourist who was drugged and raped.
A Dutch woman who says she was drugged and raped in a Qatar nightclub was convicted by a court for having sex out of wedlock and given a one-year suspended sentence. The woman, identified only as “Laura,” will be deported to her native country Netherlands once the ruling is formalized, but this sentencing is completely unjust and backward.
Qatar is a notoriously conservative state, but this case goes above and beyond the usual standard. This woman was drugged and violated against her will; she should be offered assistance, not charged with a crime. In the sentencing, a court official referred to her punishment as “lenient,” stating that: “Had she been a Muslim woman, she would have received at least five years in jail.”
Victim blaming is common practice in rape culture, and it is time for it to come to an end. Sign the petition below and demand that this unfair punishment be rescinded immediately.
Dear Dr. Al Marri,
I am writing to express my outrage over the recent conviction of a Dutch tourist who was drugged and raped in a nightclub in Doha. This woman, known only as “Laura,” received a one-year suspended sentence despite no wrongdoing on her part.
Laura was unconscious and violated against her will. She did not choose to break the law–a vile and cruel man took advantage of her when she was unable to consent. She has suffered enough, and convicting her of any crime is excessive. I urge you to overturn this conviction and allow her to return to her old life as best as she can.
