Target: USA Swimming Foundation Executive Director Debbie Hesse
Goal: Thank USA Swimming for banning the Stanford Rapist from ever competing in the Olympics for the U.S.
Stanford rapist Brock Turner will never be able to compete in the Olympics for the United States thanks to the organization USA Swimming giving him a lifetime ban. This comes after Turner was convicted of raping an unconscious woman behind a dumpster for 20 minutes yet was only sentenced to six months in jail, which is likely to turn into a measly three months.
Part of the reason Turner was given such a lenient sentence is that the judge felt that he had such a promising future and that a lengthy sentence would damage his future. Many people were frustrated by this due to the fact that the victim’s life will be severely impacted for much longer than even the maximum sentence for rape.
Giving a lenient sentence to a convicted rapist tells other young men that they can rape without fearing a significant punishment, at least if they’re white athletes. It’s therefore encouraging that organizations like USA Swimming are helping to dole out real justice by ending his Olympic dreams.
Someone who committed such a horrendous and harmful act deserves long term consequences. Doing such a think should have a significant impact on the perpetrator’s life. Sign our petition to thank USA Swimming for banning Brock Turner from competing in the Olympics.
Dear Director Hesse,
I want to thank you and your organization for banning Brock Turner for life due to his being convicted of rape. As I’m sure you know, many people are very upset at the fact that he’ll only be spending up to six months in jail for such a horrific crime against an unconscious woman. Thanks to you, Turner will at least see one long term consequence for his despicable actions.
It’s terrifying when convicted rapists are only given a slap on the wrist as that effectively tells other potential rapists that they can get away with their crimes with very little consequences. This at least tells other swimmers that they can’t compete in the Olympics if they commit rape, and it tells victims that you’re on their side.
Thank you again for imposing consequences upon Brock Turner. His victim will deal with emotional and psychological consequences for the rest of her life, and Turner needs to carry his actions with him for just as long. I applaud you for standing up against rapists and rape culture.
