Protect Students Against Campus Sexual Assault

Target: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

Goal: Increase protections for victims of campus assaults and increase penalties for colleges that mishandle cases.

More transparency on sexual assault investigations on college campuses and more rights to victims could be given by a newly introduced piece of legislation called the Hold Accountable and Lend Transparency (HALT) Campus Sexual Violence Act. This bill was created in response to continuing problems with college administrations mishandling cases of sexual assault and rape.

The HALT Act increases transparency by creating an online list of all college campuses under investigation by the government for sexual assault issues and Title IX violations. It also includes a list of findings by investigators. This allows prospective students to select colleges partially based on the safety of the campus and how well the administration handles these cases. Plus, it increases penalties for any college that tries to cover up sexual assault or engages in other violations and gives more rights to student victims.

Legislation like this is desperately needed at the country continues to have severe issues with colleges mishandling cases of sexual assault and rape, including actively seeking to punish victims for coming forward and letting those found guilty of assault off with a slap on the wrist. Sign our petition to urge Congress to quickly pass the HALT Act.

Dear Minority Leader Pelosi,

A piece of legislation with bipartisan support could make life easier for young people looking for colleges, give more rights to victims of campus sexual assaults, and provide more transparency and greater punishments for college administrations that mishandle campus assault cases. Called the Hold Accountable and Lend Transparency (HALT) Campus Sexual Violence Act, this bill is sorely needed, as evidenced by the continuing problems across the nation with victims being failed by college administrations.

Increased investigations by the federal government into Title IX violations are encouraging, but problems with cover ups, poor treatment of victims, and lack of appropriate punishment for those found guilty of sexual assault continue to pop up. To stop this, colleges need to be subject to severe punishments for violations. Prospective students should also be able to know if a campus they’re looking at is safe.

I have no doubt that you’re a supporter of protecting sexual assault and rape victims, and it looks like the HALT Act is likely to pass. Please do everything you can to speed up the process and ensure that it becomes law as soon as possible so that victims can finally have justice.
