Target: Anita Alvarez, Cook County State’s Attorney
Goal: Appropriately punish person responsible for bombing of Target bathroom likely as part of anti-transgender protest.
A bomb went off in a Target store bathroom in Evanston, Illinois, likely as an attempt of violent protest against the company’s inclusive bathroom policy. Transphobic bigots have been boycotting and protesting Target for letting people use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identities rather than with the gender assigned to them at birth. Now the protests have crossed the line into domestic terrorism.
According to authorities, the bomb was made out of a plastic bottle and appeared to be the same material as that of the Boston Marathon bomb. Luckily, no one was in the bathroom at the time of the detonation and therefore no one was hurt. The damage was also minimal.
Apparently, anti-trans bigotry is so strong that someone would risk lives just to try and scare harmless individuals from using a public restroom. We need to ensure that this kind of terrorism is harshly punished to send the message that violence and threats against any Americans will not be tolerated.
Target stands firm in its commitment to equality and fair treatment despite the terrorist attack. Sign our petition to stand with the company and demand that authorities commit to tracking down anyone involved in the bombing and pursue the maximum sentence possible for those convicted.
Dear Attorney Alvarez,
A Target store in Evanston, Illinois recently suffered through a terrorist attack. Someone planted a plastic bottle bomb in the store bathroom that detonated, causing damage to the room. Luckily, no one was inside at the time so there were no injuries.
This occurred during a time when there are still widespread protests against Target’s inclusive bathroom policy that doesn’t force transgender people to either use a bathroom that puts them at risk of violence or hold their urine, risking health problems. It seems very likely that this bombing is connected to the bigoted protests against basic rights and dignity for trans individuals.
If whoever did this gets away with it, it will prove that this kind of behavior is a good idea and increases the chance of copycat crimes. We therefore urge you to pursue this criminal and go after the maximum possible sentence, including terrorism charges if possible, for anyone connected to this bombing.
