Target: Luther Sperle, President of the Stoughton Fair board
Goal: Cancel brutal pig wrestling event where animals suffer and replace it with humane entertainment.
A cruel event that will see a pig chased around a small muddy pit and stuffed into a barrel must be cancelled. The Stoughton Fair in southern Wisconsin has organized a pig wrestling event where several four-person teams will pursue and manhandle a terrified animal. During the event, pigs reportedly scream and struggle to get away. Animals are sentient creatures and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. This cruelty is completely intolerable, especially in the name of entertainment.
Moreover, as the Alliance for Animals and the Environment rightly states, “Adults have a responsibility to teach children the importance of empathy and compassion for all creatures,” and this event risks sending the harmful message to impressionable minds that it is acceptable to abuse animals.
Last year St. Patrick’s Parish, also in Wisconsin, decided to discontinue its pig wrestling event, replacing it instead with an all-human game of foosball in the mud. Sign this petition urging Stoughton Fair to do the same, so that no more pigs are cruelly brutalized for the sake of a game.
Dear Mr. Sperle,
I urge you to cancel Stoughton Fair’s pig wrestling event. This activity sees pigs chased around a small muddy pit, tackled, manhandled and stuffed into a barrel or dragged onto a platform. This is no treatment for a sentient animal who suffers immense pain and distress for the sake of fairgoers amusement. Moreover, the tide is turning against animal abuse as more and more people realize that animals are worthy of our compassion and respect.
Please follow St. Patrick’s Parish’s progressive move and replace Stoughton Fair’s cruel pig wrestling event with an all-human activity. Mistreating animals for fun is no longer acceptable in this day and age, please urgently cancel this event for good.
