Target: Portland Public School Board Chair Tom Koehler
Goal: Investigate lead found endangering children’s health in Portland, Oregon’s schools.
The public school district in Portland, Oregon has recently been forced to switch to bottled water for student drinking, cooking, and all school activities, as lead readings over federal limits were recorded. Lead is a neurotoxin especially harmful to young children, and can result in learning disabilities, decreased mental function, kidney damage, and speech impairment. Any level of lead in school drinking water is unacceptable, and there must be a full investigation into the reasons why children may be being poisoned in Portland.
This petition is directed to Portland Public School Board Chair Tom Koehler, to institute a full investigation as to the reasons why lead is present and how it can be removed. This issue must be fully addressed and cannot be overlooked. Furthermore, school board members took over two months to notify parents about the lead issues in schools, which is two months too long. Parents, students, and the public must be kept fully informed at all times. The school board must also investigate the lack of communication with parents and how it can be improved. The health of Portland’s children must be prioritized. The Portland School Board should also seek funding from the federal government and the EPA under lead abatement legislation, to soften the financial cost of removing all lead from the schools’ water systems.
Any lead is unacceptable, as even small amounts can affect children in terrible ways. Sign the petition now to protect school children from lead poisoning.
Dear Chair Koehler,
The recent discovery of excessive amounts of lead in the Portland Public School system is incredibly distressing. Even more distressing is the apparent lack of communication between the school board and parents about the presence of lead in school water. You must open a full investigation into the presence of lead in the schools’ water system, how the lead can be removed, and how communication between the school board and parents can be improved.
The health of Portland’s children is paramount. Any amount of lead in the Portland Public School system is unacceptable. There can be no compromises when the issue is the health of children, whom lead poisoning disproportionately affects. Children who ingest lead will suffer from a number of debilitating health issues, including learning disabilities, kidney failure, speech impediments, and decreased mental function. If possible, to assist in the lead removal, federal funding should be requested under lead abatement legislation.
Mr. Koehler, you must immediately and fully investigate the presence lead for the sake of Portland’s children.
