Target: NYPD Police Commissioner William J. Bratton
Goal: Track down youths who chased black teens shouting racial slurs, resulting in one death, and charge them with a hate crime.
A 16-year-old kid died after being chased through the streets by a group of racist youths shouting racial slurs, including the n-word. It’s suspected that Dayshen McKenzie died of an asthma attack after collapsing immediately following the chase in which one of the pursuers was described as waving a gun and shouting “I’m gonna shoot you, n*****!”
The incident is being arrested as a hate crime and no suspects have yet been arrested. More might have died if not for the fact that police officers were nearby when the racist mob cornered the group of black youths. Disturbingly, the officers who wrote up a report at the scene of McKenzie’s death claimed that there was “no indication of a bias element.”
Screaming racial slurs is absolutely an indication of bias and a key component of a clear hate crime. This incident comes at a time when racial tensions in the country are high and it is another indication that racist language and behaviors from politicians, police, and others in power lead to racist violent and death in the streets.
The racist youths responsible for McKenzie’s death need to be swiftly tracked down, arrested, and charged with a hate crime. Sign our petition to demand that police don’t drop the ball and let a case of terrible racist murder go without sufficient punishment.
Dear Commissioner Bratton,
Young Dayshen McKenzie recently collapsed and died after being chased through the streets by a racist mob that was reportedly shouting racial slurs and waving a gun, threatening to shoot them and using the n-word. The police who initially investigated the scene claimed that there was no indication of bias in the crime, but the use of horrid racial slurs against a group of black youths make it clear that this was a racist hate crime.
McKenzie likely died of an asthma attack that never would have occurred if he hadn’t had to run for his life. It’s extremely disturbing to hear about deaths due to racist mobs chasing black people through the streets of New York in this day and age. It brings back memories of a time that we were supposed to have grown out of and left behind.
The participants in the crime that led to McKenzie’s death need to be tracked down and at least charged with a hate crime based on witness reports of racial slurs. We demand that you do everything in your power to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
