Target: Maine Governor Paul LePage
Goal: Stop sending threatening letters to people who donate to environmentalist groups that are trying to save the world.
A governor sent out a threatening letter to those who had donated to the Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM), an environmentalist group dedicated to stopping pollution, protecting the state’s ecosystems, and combating climate change. He got access to the database of the organizations donors and sent a personal letter than has outraged supporters of NRCM and environmentalists in general.
Recipients of the letter and the NRCM have called the language of the letter “threatening.” In the letter, Governor LePage said, “I would request that you carefully review NRCM’s policy positions before donating to them in the future. It is an activist group that says ‘no’ to every opportunity to allow Mainers to prosper.”
Apparently, Governor LePage would rather spend time and taxpayer money attacking what he views as a political enemy and sending nasty letters to citizens than actually governing. It’s ridiculous to claim that environmentalists don’t want people to prosper. They simply are looking at the big picture, understanding that very few can prosper under catastrophic climate change and that human prosperity is not more important than the health of all other animal species.
Governor LePage is clearly no friend to environmentalists, but this is going too far. Sign our petition to demand that LePage apologize to the donors he harassed with this letter and pledge to never pull such a gross political intimidation stunt again.
Dear Governor LePage,
You recently sent out a mass letter to NRCM donors telling them to think twice before giving money to the environmentalist organization. The language in this letter has been described as “threatening” by recipients. This leaves people to wonder, are you a governor or are you an organized crime boss?
It’s completely inappropriate to obtain the names and addresses of people who donate to an organization you don’t like, using taxpayer money to imply that giving the NRCM money hurts the prosperity of your state. In fact, it’s you who are threatening the prosperity of your citizens by refusing to consider the imminent threat of climate change and how catastrophic it could to an an economy that depends on fishing in a coastal state.
If water levels keep rising, you might soon not have a state to govern. If you keep threatening people who are trying to protect their home from total destruction, you may find yourself to no longer be allowed to govern. We demand that you immediately issue a public apology and pledge to immediately cease sending threats to environmentalists.
