Target: Charlie Baker, Governor of Massachusetts
Goal: Support bill which guarantees transgender people the right to use their preferred bathroom.
Transgender people will be guaranteed the right to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their gender identity, thanks to a bill which recently passed in the Massachusetts state legislature. The governor of Massachusetts, who previously would not say whether he would sign the bill, has now come out in support of it. Massachusetts will become the 18th state to provide such protection to transgender people.
This bill has passed in the middle of a maelstrom of controversy over transgender rights in the United States. Officials from 11 states have sued the Obama administration because it directed all public schools in the country to allow transgender students to use their preferred bathrooms. Republican lawmakers claim allowing transgender people to use their preferred bathroom will allow male sexual predators to prey on girls, but the states which already protect trans people’s right to use their preferred bathrooms have seen no increase in sexual assaults.
Trans people have the right to safety and security when they are going about their daily activities, including using the restroom. Massachusetts’ new bill is a victory for transgender rights. Sign the petition below to praise the legislation.
Dear Governor Baker,
As you already know, the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate both recently passed a measure guaranteeing transgender people the right to use the bathroom which is consistent with their gender identity. I want to thank you for expressing your support for this bill.
As a Republican, you have broken from the mold in supporting this bill. Your colleagues in other states have passed laws forbidding transgender people from using their preferred bathroom, or sued the Obama administration for telling public schools they must allow trans students to use their preferred bathroom. Amidst this extremely polarizing issue, you have taken a brave stand for transgender rights.
Transgender people should not have to live in fear of being harassed or assaulted simply for being who they are. Using the bathroom is a source of anxiety for many transgender people. Massachusetts’ new bill will offer trans people a sense of safety and security, and will affirm that transgender people deserve equal rights and equal treatment. Thank you for supporting this bill. Thank you for standing up for what is right.
