Target: Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan
Goal: Reject the proposed bill that would legalize wife-beating and other misogynistic practices in Pakistan.
A group in Pakistan has proposed a bill that would make it legal for a husband to beat his wife if she doesn’t dress properly, turns down sex, talks to strangers, speaks too loudly or gives money without her husband’s permission.
In addition to this already horrific proposal, the bill would also make it illegal for female nurses to care for male patients, ban women from combat, ban women from receiving foreign dignitaries, and ban them from working in advertisements.
The bill was proposed by the Council of Islamic Ideology, a constitutional body of clerics and scholars (and men from religious pressure groups) which advises the government on religious matters.
The bill is the council’s angry response to a women’s protection law passed recently by the government that would make it easier for female victims of domestic violence to report abuse. This new proposal is a disgusting attack on the rights of women and must not pass. Urge officials to strike down this violent and misogynistic bill.
Dear Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif,
The Council of Islamic Ideology recently proposed a bill that would legalize the beating of women and place sexist restrictions on what women can and can’t do. These kinds of notions are outdated, and they shouldn’t be allowed to exist in our modern society.
Legalizing violence against women is abhorrent and men should not be given this control over women. I urge you to shoot down this ridiculous proposal and continue to protect women.
