Target: Lawrence Wasden, Idaho Attorney General
Goal: Seek maximum punishment for football players who allegedly sexually assaulted a black, disabled teammate.
Three white high school football players allegedly sexually assaulted a black, disabled teammate with a coat hanger. The victim of the assault was also allegedly called racist names by his teammates and had long been a victim of bullying and sexual harassment before the sexual assault took place.
Horrendous crimes like these cannot go unpunished. These students allegedly subjected their teammate to trauma, pain, and humiliation simply because he was different. Such inexcusable actions wreak of racism and ableism. These students are ages 16, 17, and 18—certainly old enough to know that what they were doing was wrong and disgusting. They must be punished accordingly.
The three players have been charged with sexual assault, and 11 administrators and coaches are facing a lawsuit from the victim’s family because they did nothing to stop the ongoing racist abuse. Sign the petition to the Idaho attorney general below to ensure that all of the parties responsible for this crime receive the maximum punishment possible.
Dear Attorney General Wasden,
I am writing in support of and in solidarity with a high school student who was reportedly sexually assaulted by his teammates on the football team. I know you are already familiar with the case. With this letter, I want to thank you for filing charges against the three students responsible for the assault and encourage you to seek the maximum punishment against each of them.
This assault was likely motivated by racism and ableism, making it an alleged hate crime. These three students have demonstrated that they are violent, that they have no regard for the suffering of others, and that they possess a dangerous attitude of superiority over those who are different from them. I want to encourage you to seek a conviction and the maximum sentence against these students. They must be punished for carrying out this heinous crime against their teammate.
You may also be aware that the family of the victim has filed a lawsuit against 11 administrators and coaches at the school, who allegedly witnessed ongoing racist taunts and sexual harassment toward the victim but did nothing to stop them. If it is possible to hold these negligent coaches and administrators criminally responsible, I urge you to do so. A coach who sits by and does nothing while his players hurl racist slurs at a teammate is implicitly encouraging racist behavior. Such a person is not fit to be coaching high school students.
This was a horrendous crime, and those responsible must be punished severely so that it does not happen again.
