Target: Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)
Goal: Don’t mandate that Guantanamo Bay be kept open and used to detain ISIS militants.
The National Defense Authorization Act of 2017 has been a source of controversy for weeks, with the newest proposed amendment continuing that tradition. The newest proposed amendment exists for the purpose of derailing President Obama from being able to fulfill his campaign promise to close down the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, by mandating that ISIS prisoners be detained there.
Guantanamo Bay has been the epicenter of a king’s ransom of human rights abuses, including acts of torture. The existence and use of Guantanamo Bay has been a sore spot for Islamic terrorists. The prison has been frequently referred to in copious amounts of media and propaganda and may even be an inspiration for acts of Islamic terrorism. Despite this, Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Steve Daines (R-MT) have no problem trying to force an NDAA amendment that would exacerbate this problem and Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Tim Scott (R-SC), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Pat Roberts (R-KS), Mark Kirk (R-IL), and James Inhofe (R-OK) have no problem supporting such a devastating amendment.
President Obama campaigned on the closure of Guantanamo Bay, but his plans have been repeatedly derailed by an obstructionist Republican-controlled Congress. President Obama’s last attempt to do so came in February, but like his other attempts was easily defeated by a Congress that fails to recognize the issues with the facility, from its human rights abuses to its use as propaganda by an aggressor seeking to inflict as much harm on the United States and its allies as possible. But, despite the obstruction, President Obama has managed to decrease the Guantanamo inmate population over 70 percent during his time in office.
Given the controversy surrounding Guantanamo Bay, what the prison embodies for persistent, productive enemy combatants, and President Obama’s continuing mission to shut the prison down during his presidency, sign the petition to let Congressional Republicans know this amendment should be dropped.
Dear Sen. Reid,
Congressional Republicans are trying to add to the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act an amendment that would not only keep open, but continue the use of Guantanamo Bay Prison in Cuba. They seek to authorize the incarceration of ISIS militants at the prison, despite the knowledge of human rights abuses taking place and the probability that Guantanamo Bay is a source of inspiration for the very militants they wish to imprison behind those walls. This effort by Senators Gardner, Daines, and their ilk has the capacity to only further intensify the hostilities between the United States and Islamic terrorists and further influence the latter to continue committing acts of terrorism around the world.
It is with this in mind that we urge you to take whatever steps are necessary to defeat this amendment. The risk is too great to allow Congressional Republicans to not only keep President Obama from fulfilling a campaign promise, but also put American lives in greater danger by keeping open a symbol of American oppression and an influential piece of radical Islamic propaganda.
