Target: Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Governor, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan
Goal: Punish murderers who shot and killed a young transgender activist.
A 23-year-old transgender activist in northern Pakistan has died after being shot six times and denied proper medical treatment. Alesha, the transgender woman, was gunned down by a violent gang known for targeting members of Pakistan’s transgender community. She was then subjected to neglect at a local hospital.
After being shot Alesha was taken to the hospital, where doctors spent an hour deliberating whether to place her in the men’s or women’s ward as Alesha continued to bleed. She was eventually moved to the women’s ward, where she was subjected to further abuse. One doctor allegedly asked for her phone number, while another reportedly inquired if her breasts were real. Alesha was transferred to a VIP ward for treatment after her story garnered the attention of local media, but it was too little, too late. She died a few days later.
Alesha’s death serves as yet another instance of abuse and violence against the transgender community in Pakistan. Sign the petition below to urge the government to punish those responsible for this heinous crime.
Dear Governor Jhagra,
I am writing to voice my outrage over the death of Alesha, a young transgender activist who was shot six times. Once admitted to the hospital, Alesha was repeatedly demeaned and mocked, and this neglect and abuse almost assuredly played a role in her untimely death.
Alesha’s killers are part of a violent gang known for attacking and murdering transgender people, and it is time to put an end to their persecution of this marginalized community. I urge you to investigate this case and bring these dangerous killers to justice.
