Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Halt any attempt to weaken pesticide regulations under the guise of protecting people from the Zika virus.
Republicans are trying to roll back environmental regulations with a bill deceptively called the Zika Vector Control Act. All this bill actually does is allow people to spray toxic pesticides wherever they want without a permit. It doesn’t actually do anything to specifically target the Zika virus. Plus, there’s already a current stipulation in current pesticide regulations that say they can be sprayed without a permit in the case of an emergency like a mosquito-spread virus.
This is not the first time anti-environment Republicans have tried to make it so anyone can spray pesticides all over the place without a permit. They attempted the same thing five years ago with a bill called the Zika Control Act right after a court case determined that individuals and companies must apply for a specific permit in order to spray pesticides into a body of water. They did the same thing when the West Nile virus was a threat.
If these regulations are cut, people will not only have to petition the EPA for a permit to spray chemicals into bodies of water, they won’t even have to notify the EPA that they’re doing it. There are already over a thousand waterways that are considered to be “impaired” from pesticide use. We can’t sacrifice any more. Sign our petition to urge President Obama to veto any bill that rolls back EPA regulations on pesticides without actually doing anything real to combat the spread of the Zika virus.
Dear President Obama,
House Republicans have passed a bill called the Zika Vector Control Act that does nothing but roll back EPA regulations around pesticide use. The bill removes the requirement to get a special permit from the EPA to spray pesticides into a body of water or notify the agency if pesticides get into said water. It doesn’t actually do anything to stop the spread of the Zika virus since permits aren’t necessary in emergency situations anyway, which would include the threat of a dangerous virus.
Anti-environment Republicans have been trying to pull the same thing every time a new threat pops up ever since the requirement to obtain a permit to spray pesticides in water sources was help up by the courts five years ago. This is just an attempt to appeal to big agriculture companies and other corporations that sponsor these politicians.
We can’t allow a bill like this to slip through. Pesticides are a huge threat to our water supply, various animal species, and the entire farce is an insult to the families stricken by the Zika virus in the U.S. Please pledge to thoroughly vet any bill around the Zika threat and veto the ones that are simply disguised attempts to let big corporations pollute our water.
