Stop Egregious Attacks on Wildlife

Target: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

Goal: Don’t allow appalling anti-wildlife bill to reach the President’s desk.

An aggressive pro-hunting, anti-wildlife bill that passed in the House may move forward on the coattails of an important energy policy bill thanks to certain lawmakers. The amendment, deceptively entitled the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, is a thinly-veiled attempt to strip important protections for wildlife in favor of unchecked hunting and trapping privileges.

The SHARE Act includes a laundry list of anti-wildlife provisions. The act would open up millions of acres of public lands to hunting and trapping without scrutiny, forbid the EPA from regulating lead ammunition, and halt the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s efforts to protect elephants from the illegal ivory trade. The act would also force the National Park Service to allow hunting of bison in Grand Canyon National Park. These senseless and shortsighted provisions are just a snapshot of the bill, which contains dozens more attacks on wildlife at home and abroad.

The authors of the SHARE Act knew it was too controversial to make it to the President’s desk and have a chance at being signed into law alone. Thus, lawmakers are looking to attach the bill as an amendment to an important, unrelated energy bill in an effort to sneak it through. Don’t let Congress get away with this blatant attack on natural resources and urge the Senate not to pass the amended energy bill.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator McConnell,

I was shocked and appalled to learn that a notorious anti-wildlife bill, ambiguously named the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, passed in the House and may be on its way to the President’s desk via a completely unrelated energy bill. Not only is the SHARE Act a horrific attack on national and international wildlife protections, it also poses threats to people and companion animals by deregulating trapping and the use of toxic lead ammunition.

The creators of the SHARE Act knew the bill was too outrageous and controversial to make it alone–so they decided to attempt to sneak it through under the noses of the American people. This kind of behavior flouts the democratic process and pushes the will of a few individuals on all of Congress. I urge you and your fellow Senators to see through this ruse and not to allow the SHARE Act to proceed any further, either as an amendment or a bill.

Sincerely,

  1. I find it difficult to come up with words that cogently articulate my disgust and horror at this murderous “SHARE” bill. What is even more alarming is the sick macho mindset behind such a piece of legislation. Blood lust; that’s about as close a definition as I can give, without resorting to obscenity. And to covertly stick it onto other legislation? Who do you men think you are — God? Well, you are most manifestly not. I will stop there.

  2. This is imperative. If this goes through then why not just kill everything and be done with it. What kind of elected officials come up with this insanity! We have so many Trappers that mutiple dogs and even kids are getting maimed and GOVERNMENT won’t stop! I can’t even go for a walk without some crazy “sportsman” out there ready to kill anything that moves, it’s out of control.

  3. MUST PROTECT THE SACRED WILDLIFE FOR THE FUTURE NOW.
