Target: Tennessee Representative Steve Cohen
Goal: Ensure completion of a new wind farm in Tennessee.
There are plans underway to construct twenty-three new wind turbines in Cumberland County, TN. These turbines would provide electricity to 20,000 homes and create local jobs at low cost. However Tennessee lawmakers, such as Republican Senator Lamar Alexander, are against the construction. Urge Representative Steve Cohen to speak in favor of the law, balance the debate, and give Tennessee the renewable energy it deserves.
There are many benefits to using wind powered energy. It does not create waste or pollution, and it’s inexpensive. Wind energy costs between four and six cents for every kilowatt hour. Building new wind turbines will help both the environment and Cumberland County. According to Apex Clean Energy, which is building the turbines, the turbines will produce $1.4 million of economic output every year and create seven permanent jobs. In 2014, the wind power industry generated 73,000 jobs nationwide.
Senator Lamar, who argued against the turbines, is pro-nuclear. He has urged the federal government to end a tax credit for wind energy in order to increase the available funds for nuclear research. Nuclear power, unlike wind power, does produce waste. It also comes with an added safety risk, as the radioactivity it generates is highly toxic. As a proponent of nuclear energy, Lamar has built alliances with companies working in it. He has accepted campaign donations from the Exelon Corporation and General Atomics, both major producers of nuclear energy.
Wind power is a safer, cleaner source of energy than nuclear power. The construction of turbines in Cumberland County will improve both the environment and life in the county. Insist that the project continue and call on lawmakers to speak up in its defense.
Dear Congressman Cohen,
The plans to build new wind turbines in Cumberland County must go forward, and they need your voice to do it. The turbines would deliver low cost electricity to 20,000 homes and provide new jobs in the county. It is in the best interests of Tennessee for the construction of the turbines to continue.
Nevertheless, your fellow lawmaker, Senator Lamar, has spoken out against these turbines. Lamar claims that the turbines would be “unsightly.” However, the benefits of having the turbines outweigh their alleged unsightliness. The turbines would generate $1.4 million in economic output each year, produce seven permanent jobs, and reduce environmental pollution.
President Obama has promoted wind power as a source of “clean, American energy.” Follow his example in standing up for this cheap renewable power source. Protect the welfare of Tennesseans and the environment alike.
