Target: Barack Obama, President of the United States
Goal: Applaud the release of Guantanamo Bay inmate arrested at 19 and held for 14 years.
One of the last remaining Guantanamo Bay inmates has been scheduled for release. The man, known by the single name of Obaidullah, was arrested when he was only 19 years old as part of a raid on his family’s home. He was once considered for a trial by military tribunal, but charges against him were dismissed in 2011. He has languished in the offshore prison since then while awaiting a drawn-out release process.
During his imprisonment, Obaidullah reported enduring several human rights abuses. He claims that he was subjected to “enhanced interrogation” measures, which included having his hands chained above his head for long periods of time and being forced to wear a hood with a tight rope around his neck. He also says that he was beaten, tortured, and denied medical care when severely ill. Obaidullah participated in widespread hunger strikes by prisoners in protest of the conditions of their detention, and was subject to widely-criticized force-feeding procedures.
Guantanamo Bay is notorious for human rights abuses, which include the prolonged detention of suspected criminals without charge, access to legal representation, or a speedy trial. Physical torture is reportedly rampant in the facility, with dozens of allegations of sexual assault, sleep deprivation, and barbaric force-feeding procedures.
Allowing prisoners’ physical and mental health to deteriorate while they are kept in torturous conditions without charge or trial is completely contrary to American values. Releasing this man with appropriate security monitoring and integration support brings the U.S. one step closer to closing the barbaric prison for good. Sign the petition below to applaud the long overdue release of Obaidullah.
Dear President Obama,
Another Guantanamo Bay detainee is slated for release, under strict security watch and with the help of integration specialists. Obaidullah was arrested when he was 19 years old and has been held for 14 years, five of them without charge. He has reportedly endured various human rights abuses during his detention, including torturous interrogations and barbaric force-feeding procedures.
The detention of suspects without trial or charge is an affront to American law and values, and only serves as recruitment fodder for extremist groups. By releasing this man and mitigating his already-low risk for extremism, you have brought the U.S. one step closer to closing Guantanamo Bay. We, the undersigned, applaud the release of this man and urge you to continue to work to close the facility before the end of your term.
