Target: Trinity Academy Principal Kevin Neuenswander
Goal: End school’s policy that allows for expulsion of students with LGBT parents, siblings, or even LGBT-supportive homes.
A private school can expel or reject students with LGBT relatives or who live in pro-LGBT homes, according to Trinity Academy policy. All students and their parents must sign an agreement that contains a stipulation about the school’s “traditional, Christian understanding” on gender and sexuality.
The agreement states that “when the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home is counter to the school’s understanding of a biblical lifestyle, including the practice or promotion of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) lifestyle or alternative gender identity, the school should have the right, in its sole discretion, to deny the admission of an applicant or discontinue enrollment of a current student.” This kind of language suggests that any relative living in the home that happens to be of the LGBT community could get a student kicked out, or that even not being homophobic is grounds for expulsion.
Many private Christian schools have policies against their students being in same sex relationships, but this takes bigotry to a whole new level. Do parents need to kick out gay family members or refuse transgender family members in need just so their kids won’t be expelled from school? It basically stipulates that the entire family must be utterly homophobic for students to attend.
Sexual orientation and gender identity should never bar a young person from an education, and neither should a loving and tolerant attitude. Sign our petition to demand that Trinity Academy to remove any and all homophobic policies that would bar LGBT kids, kids with LGBT family members, or pro-LGBT kids from attending.
Dear Principal Neuenswander,
It’s come to light that your school requires students to sign an agreement stating that attendees in homes that practice or promote the “LGBT lifestyle” (whatever that means) can be denied entry or expelled. It’s absolutely ridiculous to deny a young person an education just because they don’t live in a completely homophobic household.
You’ve state that you haven’t yet expelled or barred students with LGBT siblings, but with a policy like this, what’s to stop you? And applied or not, this policy still sends the message that having a sexual orientation or gender identity you find offensive makes them bad people–so bad in fact that they could taint your academy just by living in the same home as one of your students.
This policy is blatantly homophobic in a way we haven’t seen in this nation for decades. It’s completely unacceptable in this day and age and needs to be removed immediately. We demand that you end any and all homophobic policies and focus on educating your students rather than promoting hate and excluding people.
