Target: Reverend Christopher John Antal
Goal: Applaud Reverend Christopher John Antal for resigning his position as Army Chaplain in protest of the Obama administration’s secretive drone killings.
Former Army Chaplain Reverend Christopher John Antal has resigned in protest of the Obama administration’s secretive drone killings. Antal, who previously served in Afghanistan, submitted his resignation along with a letter to Obama in which he explicitly denounced targeted killings carried out via Obama’s drone warfare program. This was a courageous choice by Antal. It will help draw attention to secretive drone killings and it will help put pressure on our federal government to reconsider their use of armed drones for unsanctioned murder.
In his letter of resignation to the President, Antal wrote: “The Executive Branch continues to claim the right to kill anyone, anywhere on earth, at any time, for secret reasons, based on secret evidence, in a secret process, undertaken by unidentified officials. I refuse to support this policy of unaccountable killing.”
Antal has been speaking out against Obama’s drone program since 2012. That year he gave a sermon to troops and civilian contractors in which he he criticized these targeted killings. The sermon was deemed politically inflammatory by his superiors but that did not stop Antal for continuing his criticisms in the form of public letters to the President.
He was finally moved to officially resign his position after The Stimson Center released their February report detailing the extent of civilian casualties and other problems concerning Obama’s drone program. The lack of progress on the issue since he began serving as an Army Chaplain troubled him deeply, so much so that he saw no choice but to resign in protest.

Dear Reverend Antal,
Your decision to resign your position as Army Chaplain in protest of the Obama administration’s secretive drone killings is a courageous and laudable one. By speaking out against these targeted attacks carried out via drones, you are helping to draw attention to this issue and to put pressure on the Obama administration to change their ways.
We cannot continue to remain silent while our country carries out unsanctioned murder behind closed doors. The public needs to have a say in how (if at all) we use armed drones. More individuals such as yourself must use their words and actions to protest these unacceptable drone killings.
Moreover, the Obama administration needs to be held accountable. Thank you for bringing awareness to this issue and for spurring further conversations.
