Target: Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of Portugal
Goal: Applaud Portugal for running only off of renewable energy for a full 107 hours.
The nation of Portugal has just done the unthinkable. The small European nation just set a record for renewable energy use. Through a combination of hydroelectric, wind, and solar power, the entire country was powered by renewable energy for a staggering 107 consecutive hours.
Portugal has been hell-bent on moving to renewable resources as a means to provide power for its 10.5 million people. At one time, the nation was considered one of the European Union’s top producers of carbon dioxide emissions. In 2007, Sines, one of Portugal’s coal burning power plants, was the 13th worst in all of Europe, according to the World Wildlife Fund’s “Dirty 30” list.
But in recent years, Portugal has made a solid effort to clean up its image, as well as its energy. The nation has invested heavily in alternative fuels and sources of power. In 2013, 70 percent of the country’s electricity was powered by renewable energy for a three month period.
Portugal’s success is a testament to the possibilities inherent in renewable energy. Its successes are also influencing other nations to follow suit. Germany, for example, is also making strong steps to double the amount of renewable energy it uses by 2035 and plans to be entirely off nuclear power by 2022. Germany also enjoyed a brief moment recently when 90 percent of its total energy demand was accommodated by renewable resources.

Dear President Rebelo de Sousa,
The strides Portugal has made in cultivating and optimizing renewable resources are nothing short of amazing. It took fewer than 10 years for the nation to go from one of the European Union’s worst carbon emission offenders to one of the strongest, most successful defenders of the environment. The transformation has been miraculous and other nations are definitely following suit.
It is with this in mind that we wish to offer you our sincerest thanks and publicly support Portugal’s efforts to become a worldwide leader in environmentalism and renewable energy use. Portugal’s efforts are helping to make the world a better place and show the world that investing time and energy into renewable energy is not a pointless endeavor. Portugal is showing the world how these efforts can be beneficial and prove fruitful.
