Target: Speaker for the House Paul Ryan
Goal: Stop the use of anti-democratic tactics to force anti-LGBT legislation into an unrelated defense budget bill.
Republicans are trying to legalize workplace discrimination against LGBT+ persons by forcing an amendment into a completely unrelated defense budget bill and using sleazy tricks to shut down amendments that would null this discrimination allowance. This bad political behavior led to chaos in the House of Representatives as the measure that would have prohibited federal discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity was defeated by a single vote.
The anti-discrimination measure supported by the Democratic party and some Republicans was defeated after several of these Republican congresspeople suddenly switched their votes to nay due to back ally deals made with the rest of the GOP. One Democratic representative called these deals “bullying” and compared the behavior to that of the leadership in Russia.
The fact that a defense budget bill–something that needs to pass in order for the government to function–even contains anything about LGBT rights makes no sense except as a way to force through legislation that would otherwise never pass. It’s also a waste of time as President Obama has vowed to veto the bill as long as the anti-LGBT amendment remains. Sign to tell Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to get his party under control and ensure that these ridiculous and shameful tactics are ended and democracy brought back to the House.
Dear Speaker Ryan,
I understand that the House of Representatives recently fell into chaos over a measure to stop an anti-LGBT amendment forced into an unrelated defense budget bill. The fact that this so-called “religious liberty” amendment that would allow federal contractors to discriminate against LGBT persons is even in this defense bill is ridiculous as it utterly violates the principle of the separation of church and state and has little if anything to do with the defense budget.
You need to get control over your party. Using sleazy tactics and possibly bullying to get party members to change their votes at the last second makes a mockery of our democracy. One representative compared it to the kind of political behavior seen in Russia. It’s also a complete waste of time and taxpayer money as Obama has vowed to veto the bill as long as the anti-LGBT measure remains.
As Speaker, it’s your job to keep the House functioning and prevent it from turning into a complete circus, and you’re currently failing. We demand that you put an end to sleazy, underhanded vote stealing and bring dignity and democracy back to the political process.
