Target: Doug Mcmillon, CEO of Walmart
Goal: Encourage Walmart to adopt a policy that allows transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice in stores.
A cisgendered woman with a short haircut was recently harassed in a Walmart bathroom because she was presumed to be transgender. Aimee Toms, who recently donated her hair to charity, was approached by a woman who yelled, “You are not supposed to be here! You need to leave!” and then called her “disgusting” before storming out of the restroom. This incident occurred in the midst of a heated national controversy over so-called “bathroom bills,” which require trans people to use the bathroom that corresponds to the sex they were assigned at birth.
Shortly after one of these bathroom bills passed in North Carolina, Target, a major competitor of Walmart, issued a statement saying trans employees and customers are always welcome to use their preferred bathroom or fitting room in their stores. Walmart has remained silent on the issue thus far, but this incident of harassment at a Walmart in Connecticut is an opportunity for the retailer to stand up for transgender rights.
Walmart should issue a formal apology to Toms and publicly affirm that transgender individuals are welcome to use their preferred bathrooms and fitting rooms in Walmart. Such action will make trans individuals feel more comfortable shopping at Walmart, and will send a message that transphobic legislation is not acceptable. Sign the petition below to encourage Walmart to support transgender rights.
Dear Mr. Mcmillon,
I want to encourage you to publicly affirm the rights of transgender individuals to use their preferred bathroom or fitting room in Walmart stores. Recently, a cisgendered woman who was mistaken for a trans man was harassed in a bathroom in a Walmart in Connecticut. An incident like this is not good for Walmart’s image or business.
As I am sure you are aware, Target, one of your major competitors, has already released a statement saying that trans customers are welcome to use their preferred bathroom or fitting room in their stores. Target says it has experienced no decline in sales since its statement, despite a massive boycott by transphobic people.
Transgender people should not have to experience anxiety and fear when they use the restroom. So-called “bathroom bills” that have been passing in states and cities make transgender people feel afraid, ostracized, and denigrated. Walmart has the opportunity to take a stand against these horrendous pieces of legislation. I urge you to send a message that Walmart will not tolerate harassment or any unequal treatment of transgender people.
