Target: Mark Herring, Attorney General of Virginia
Goal: Investigate the alleged abuse and death of a mentally disabled man and bring his killers to justice.
A 24-year-old man who was repeatedly diagnosed as psychotic and delusional starved to death after spending several months alone in a derelict and filthy jail cell, according to a federal lawsuit. Jamycheal Mitchell was arrested for stealing $5.05 worth of candy and soda, and his punishment for this incredibly minor offense was his life.
The lawsuit, filed by Mitchell’s family, alleges that the staff at the jail refused to serve Mitchell meals and cut off the water supply in his cell. Mitchell was also left naked and without bedding or shoes. By the time he died, Mitchell had lost almost 40 pounds during his brief stint in the jail. The lawsuit further alleges that fellow inmates begged guards to assist Mitchell, but their requests were blatantly ignored.
Jamycheal Mitchell deserves justice for what was essentially a murder. As punishment for a minor crime, the man, whose mental illnesses were confirmed by doctors, was deprived of basic human needs and left to waste away. Sign the petition below and demand that these jailers are punished to the fullest extent of the law if found guilty.
Dear Mr. Herring,
I am writing to express my outrage about the death of Jamycheal Mitchell, a mentally disabled man who was left alone to starve to death in his jail cell. Arrested for stealing a few dollars’ worth of candy and soda, Mitchell was left naked, hungry, and alone over a span of four months as his captors allegedly refused to serve him meals and cut off the water supply in his cell.
Such neglect is tantamount to murder, and those responsible must be punished. I urge you to investigate this seriously troubling matter and bring those accountable to justice.
