Target: Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Paul Ryan
Goal: Call out Ted Nugent for posting video about shooting Hillary Clinton over gun control and calling her a hateful slur.
Ted Nugent recently posted a video depicting Bernie Sanders shooting Hillary Clinton with a gun, adding the comment, “I got your guncontrol [sic] right here b***h!” Nugent, singer and right wing political “activist” has long been a strong proponent of a complete lack of gun control regulations and has a history of using violent language to spread this ideal.
This video is offensive to both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Sanders, a Democratic presidential candidate, would never use violence like that nor advocate for this kind of “joke.” Language and images of politicians being shot is not funny in a country where gun violence is rampant and a Democrat was shot in the head not long ago in a mass shooting at her political gathering. The misogynistic slur is also unacceptable during a campaign season in which Clinton has been repeatedly attacked on the basis of her gender.
No matter who you want for President, we should all be able to agree that violent, hateful social media posts like this are at best in bad taste and at worst dangerous, potentially encouraging anti-Hillary individuals to attempt to kill her. Some Republican politicians have finally begun to be reasonable about Trump, condemning his ridiculous, misogynistic, and violent rhetoric. Sign our petition to demand they do the same with political sideshow Ted Nugent.
Dear Speaker Ryan,
Recently, Ted Nugent posted a violent video on his Facebook account depicting candidate Bernie Sanders shooting Hillary Clinton during an argument about gun control. He also added a comment that included a misogynistic slur against Clinton. This is unacceptable behavior for anyone whose support the Republican party has previously welcomed.
As you should be well aware, politicians have been attacked by people with guns in the past. Not long ago, Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head, leaving her with cognitive difficulties, at a political community event as part of a mass shooting. In a country where gun violence is currently out of control and political tensions are high, we cannot risk condoning violent imagery like this.
As Speaker of the House, you have a lot of power to decide which direction your party takes. You’ve condemned Donald Trump in the past for his hateful rhetoric, and you can do the same now with Ted Nugent. We demand that you publicly denounce Nugent and reaffirm your commitment to a safe, non-violent campaign season.
