Target: Jay Nixon, Governor of Missouri
Goal: Make permits and safety courses requirements to own guns in Missouri.
People in Missouri could be allowed to carry concealed weapons without having a permit or taking a gun safety course, thanks to a bill that recently passed the Missouri House of Representatives. Gun laws in Missouri are extremely lax. The state already allows open carry without having a permit. One of the co-sponsors of this bill justified it by saying that not everyone could afford to pay for the safety class which the concealed carry permit currently requires. However, safety is something that you cannot put a price on.
A gun is an extremely dangerous device which can cause harm to others even if its owner does not intend to harm anyone. For this reason, it is common sense that everyone who wants to own a gun should be required to take a class on gun safety, just as everyone who wants to drive a car must take a driving class and pass a driving test. Not only must the Missouri legislature kill this bill relaxing restrictions on concealed carry, it must introduce legislation which requires safety classes and permits for gun ownership across the board.
Pro-gun advocates claim that there should be as many “good guys with guns” as possible, in order to stop gun violence, but good intentions mean nothing if they are not accompanied by the proper skills to use a gun. Unless all gun owners are required to take a safety class, innocent lives will be at risk. Sign the petition below to encourage Missouri to tighten restrictions on guns.
Dear Governor Nixon,
As I am sure you are already aware, the Missouri House of Representatives recently passed a bill which would remove the state’s permit requirement for concealed carry. I want to encourage you to veto this bill, should it come to your desk, and also to propose a new bill which will tighten restrictions on gun ownership.
Because a gun is an incredibly dangerous device, anyone who wants to own one should be required to take a safety course on how to use it properly. Proponents of this bill say that because there is no permit required for open carry in Missouri, there should also be no permit required for concealed carry. They have the logic backwards. More safety requirements are better than none. Across the board, gun ownership in Missouri should require a permit, which should require the owner to pass a safety course.
Too many lives have been lost to gun violence, including accidental gun deaths. Please do not allow these senseless tragedies to continue.
