Target: Thomas E. Perez, Secretary of the Department of Labor
Goal: Ensure poultry industry workers are given appropriate bathroom breaks.
Poultry workers are subjected to inhumane working conditions, most notably lack of access to bathrooms, according to a recent Oxfam America study. Workers told Oxfam investigators that they’re often denied permission to use the restroom.
Investigators found evidence of poultry workers wearing adult diapers, dehydrating themselves, and holding their bladders as a result of the working conditions. The study also found higher incidents of bladder infections and at least one reported incident of a worker urinating while working on the production line. At the plants Oxfam visited, more than 80 percent of workers reported insufficient time to use the restroom.
Demand poultry plants provide adequate time and access to bathrooms for all workers.
Dear Secretary Perez,
Oxfam America recently released a report indicating that poultry workers suffer inhumane working conditions, including lack of appropriate time to use the bathroom. Oxfam investigators found evidence of workers wearing adult diapers, holding their bladders, and intentionally dehydrating themselves in response to the bathroom situation. They also found a higher incident of bladder infections and at least one person who urinated on themselves while still working the production line.
We demand poultry plant workers are given appropriate time to use the bathroom during their shifts.
